To Be, or Not To Be

To Be, or Not To Be

Well, first, Happy Diwali and Sal Mubarak :-)

It is time for the Fesitival of Lights and the Hindu new year (according to some calendars) and so allow the partying to commence!!

The next, order of business is couple existential comedies I've seen. Ordered in the exact opposite order in which I was exposed to them, Rosencrants and Gildenstern are Dead and I Heart Huckabees.

A shot as they bowed to the audience

Rosencrantz was a play put on by the Risk Theatre Initiative and frankly, I liked it :-) It's the story of Shakespeare's Hamlet, through the eyes of two otherwise insignificant characters. They try to determine what exactly the point of their existence is and how they fit into the world. To their dismay, they are are subject to the events of the play. In other words, they have no control over what happens to them, who they get to interact with and generally feel trampled on. What makes this entertaining to the audience is their thought processes. This really is a dry description of a really funny play that you should definitely go see.

I think I may want to grow up to be a fireman

As for I Heart Huckabees, this is just plain great. The audience is treated to the existential crises of a fireman, a model, a sales executive and a tree hugger. One way or the other, they decide to hire a set of "existential detectives" to help them resolve their issues.

In any case, what do I conclude from all of this? If you have somebody to chill with and munch on the thoughts in your head, you're gonna live a very happy life :-)
