I wanted to take a minute to speak to the value of exploring the borders of the nightlife. Here in Scottsdale, the largest cluster of places to run around in after hours is located in Old Towne. Among its most long-standing and dominant establishments are clubs and lounges playing 'Top40' songs at volumes too loud to permit conversation.

This weekend, Kenon and I took it upon ourselves to measure the value of "fringe establishments". We were quite pleasantly surprised.

As one would expect, the location of your establishment is the most important factor in drawing masses of people. However, we found that these fringers did not rely on the age-old technique of Top40 and cages to bring in the clientel. Instead, they have grown their own unique atmosphere. Incidentally, we liked it :-)

In any case, I encourage exploring beyond the confines of the well-trodden path.
