Cultural Granularity

Cultural Granularity

So pretty much everyday, when I talk to my parents I learn some new word in my mother tongue. The latest was a word for a sub-season. Naturally, I had never heard of a sub-season and I thought this information should be recorded on the intar-web.

We, of course, have the four seasons:

  • Winter
  • Spring
  • Summer
  • Fall

Nothing new there.

However, much of the mother land follows a completely different calendar and so I guess it's not too hard to imagine a different system of seasons...

  • Unaro = Summer (sorta)

    • Vasant = springish part
    • Grishma = the hot part
  • Chomasu = Monsoon (roughly)

    • Versa = the raining part
    • Sharat = the cooling part
  • Shiar = Winter (more, or less)

    • Hemant = the cooler part
    • Sisir = the cold part

I'm not entirely sure about the orderings ... but if there are corrections to be made, I will make them ... when/if I find out about them :-)

The point is, in a land with lots of people, lots of langauges and lots of just lots, there are even lots of seasons :-)
