First Friday's in Phoenix
First Friday's in Phoenix
So, in the spirit of going and doing things, I got myself to Phoenix's "First Friday's" last night; an event that occurs on the first Friday of each month.
Unbeknownst to me, First Friday's is not a sterile viewing of art featuring fancy clothes and incomprehensible modern art. Rather, it is a night where a few of the blocks just north of Phoenix downtown come alive with hundreds of people from all walks of life just, well, walking around.
From high schoolers to senior citizens, the public walks around admiring the works of local artists. This artists maybe purse makers, painters, sculptors, photographers who may be operating from a gallery, their own studio, a table on the sidewalk or even out of a U-Haul they rented for the evening.
Interspersed throughout these displays are musicians, fire-eaters, and a group of capoeira players!
As an added bonus I got to trade the smoke-filled rooms of clubs for mere mild spring-time allergies :-P I didn't really know how to mix with the crowd, but all in all it was a fun time!
In any case, this happened after a nice dinner at the Kenon/Maulik discovered, and soon-to-be-owned, Grimaldi's. An awesome, well-worth the above average prices, place for gourmet pizza.
This may even inspire me to check out the Scottsdale Art Walk ...
