Dishoom

I have been doing things at an incredible pace :-P Last night's adventure led me to the Hum Kisse Se Kum Nahin dance competition organized by Aashiyaana Arts and & Entertainment. The event consisted of almost twenty groups vying to place first in a field of local Indus dance talent.

I only got to see the second half, but man was I impressed. I would like to give props to the junior participants who acted their age. I'm always a little disturbed when 10 years olds trying to act twice their age. One of the groups put on a nice number where the kids wore pigtails and did cute kids stuff. Some major props to the non-Indian group for busting out an awesome dance choreographed to Chaiyya-Chaiyya.

And many congratulations to the winners of the event; they really stole the show. They treated the audience to a desi'ified version of STOMP!

Going beyond standard remixing and performing well loved filmi dances, the group known as Dishoom produced their own live music by banging on everything from thali's, clay pots, dandiya's, trash cans, and paint cans; heck one of their members was a tap dancer! It was sheer genius and perfectly executed (especially for a bunch of Wildcats). They even wove a little story into the performance: two guys ask for some tea, don't like, and end up getting into a thali fight. This involved a choreographed battle wear each fighter wore thali's like boxing gloves.

I hope to get a video posted soon so you can begin to understand the magnitude of the feat. Sigh ... I really wish I took my camera. I also like how this competition is shaping up to be a healthy inter-school rivalry on the desi plane of battle :-)
