Booking Without Standards
As people, the ones like you and me, continue to enjoy cataloging the media that they have enjoyed in the past, they will also continue to do it without realizing its full potential.
One of my favorite parts about keeping a log of what I read is recommending my favorites to others. And it seems that many other people feel the same way.
Recently, at least four websites have popped up that help you organize, describe and recommend the books you have read. In no particular order, they are:
I really wish there was a way all these could interoperate. The logic of generating recommendations and helping people explore each others' libraries is probably what makes one site better than the other. However, there is no reason I shouldn't be able to move my collection around.
To extend that, it's like Ryan and I were talking about, one could make a massive database of everything one has bought and cares to comment on (such as music, film, games, books, clothes, furniture) or even all the services you've recieved (barber, restaurant, store). But alas, for now, they will all remain fragmented across the web and we all will just have to muddle through.
What does it take to make an XML standard to uniquely describe a product?
Also, my media server (pictures, video, etc) will probably be down for another couple of days :-/
