We Shall Call It Diwali

For the impatient: Pictures

Diwali was last week; however, it was this past weekend the SACE Commodores at Vanderbilt held a celebration. Actually, they held dual celebrations due to high demand. I was part of the group that attended the evening show and it was definitely a riot. Here are the pictures, but you should know that the experience is really hard to convey.

After the show it's the after pictures

There was enjoyment when I saw that they too decided to tell the story of Diwali with their own creative twist. There was admiration when I saw an energetic garba performance; I can choreograph raas, but garba seems daunting. Finally, there was a fair bit of pride. Compared to last year's Diwali, this one felt much more college-y. From the themes of the spoken word, to the well-executed MC act, to the multitude of talented voices, to the overall spirit in the house, it was a very, very fun show!

I'll take this moment to reminisce about the good ol' days at our Diwali shows and, of course, the penultimate, year-end cultural extravaganza: Mela. Perhaps it will be motivation to get my videos up on Google video so they're easier to watch. In any case, here's to nostaligia.

Lastly, I also enjoyed some amazing times in Memphis earlier in the weekend. I hope I left enough gratitude, but if not, here's some more. Thank you :-) While I was there, I had a chance to visit the National Civil Rights Museum. It's built as part of the Lorraine Motel, Dr. King's place of assination. The museum is setup as a timeline of events that occurred in America starting in the 1800's. They have some very powerful exhibits, including pictures, video, and replicas of attire, busses and diners. Here are my pictures from there.
