Sweet Suite Music
Sweet Suite Music
If you've spoken with me on the subject of music, you may know that I dream about being able to play by ear and that I have yet to actually try to do anything about it :-) I do, however, revel in awesomeness (or is it awesomeosity?) of melodies, and while reading this post, you will too (no I got it, I revel in the awesomationacity).
They may be simple little pieces of music, just a sequence of notes, but they do so much for whatever production they're in. I present to thee examples three.
- Zelda - most everybody recognizes this simple melody but have you ever stopped to consider how much one must hear it to get through the game? With limited memory, the sound designers for this 1980's video game couldn't be very luxurious with their music. Yet, they composed a simple melody that gives the game the aura of being on a quest. It can fade away when you're concentrating on finding a way through a maze, or inspire you to keep on moving. Naturally Zelda isn't the only game with cool music. You maybe partial to Beyond Good and Evil, Contra, Street Fighter or, even, Super Mario Brothers. Enjoy them all!
- Firefly - the music behind this show is just perfect. When watching an episode you can tell that the composers knew exactly what they were doing in writing the piece. It brings out emotion, enhances the ambience and makes the experience immersive. I wish my life had a soundtrack like this :-P
- The Matrix - many moons ago, I watched The Matrix in theatres and had a great time. A short time later, I watched a copy that had no soundtrack. No music, just dialog and special effects sounds. Boringest movie, ever. I didn't even realize until the end why I was so bored with a movie that used to be so fun. The gun fights just went on and on and so many scenes seemed pointless. The lesson learned was that music brings life to the screen.
So what is the moral, exactly? The next time you're utterly mesmerized by something on the screen, make sure you give a little shout-out to the people making the music :-)
Also, Omar's analysis of MTV's Next is righteous and may be the only saving grace of the entire network.
Please note, the media server will be down until early January, sorry :-/
Finally, HAPPY HOLIDAYS !! and by all means, have yourself a merry little Christmas.
