Schoolyard Games

Schoolyard Games

I write this entry only to encourage yuppies who have winters with fantabulous weather to make some quality time and spend it outdoors. Sorry for the all text entry ... we were having such a blast, we forgot to take pictures!

On each of the previous three Saturdays, a bunch of us have organized some co-ed schoolyard games that turned out to be an absolute blast!

  • Touch football - throwing around the pigskin isn't the most original of games but since people are familiar with the game, they take the bait.
  • Kickball - coming off a fun and relatively unembarrassing time at football, the crew seems more audacious. They think kickball will be as innocuous. That's when the trap springs! The guys must kick with their off-foot. Nobody knows you need to stretch your quads out a lot before kicking the kickball; so half the guys injure themselves on the first kick. Now you have a great game going :-) Kickball and bases are available at your local sporting good stores. Having 10 people on a team is probably a good idea.
  • Prison - Although this game has a foreboding name, it's much like capture the flag ... with multiple flags. Each team has four wiffle balls to protect and all are kept in their prison. You must then cross into enemy territory and try to steal the balls, if you are caught you are sent to prison. A teammate may free any all prisoners my reaching the prison unharmed. There are a couple more rules, but even with 10 people, it's a blast :-)

What lies ahead for this enterprising crew of elementary school alumni? Maybe ultimate frisbee, maybe volleyball, who knows?

What I do know is that running around in fresh air and tumbling around in the grass is great, great fun!

A different perspective on the great outdoors
