Stanford at Night

For the impatient: Pictures

I found myself on campus again (no big deal) and it wasn't raining (gasp!). I took the opportunity to spend some time taking pictures and I'm quite please with the results. In fact I'm so pleased, that I had to share :-) Enjoy!

Stanford at Night

If you would like to take nighttime pictures, here are some tips:

(Do you have more tips? share, share, share!)

  • Stable Base - Put the camera and something really stable. Your camera bag nor your car may be stable enough. Things like the ground and a tripod are better. Incidentally I used the ground and made adjustments with little rocks :-)
  • Timer - Use the timer! After you've set your shot, pressing the button will shake the camera. Instead set the timer so when you press the button, the camera will have a few seconds to settle back into an absolutely still position.
  • Long Exposure- Find the long exposure feature of your camera. These were taken with the shutter open for 3-20 seconds (most were around 5).
  • Aperture - Clamp down the aperture. If you have a say in this, make sure the aperture is as tiny as possible. My camera goes down to f8.0.
  • Experiment - Don't settle for a single shot. Try as many settings as you have time for. Your camera's screen won't be able to tell if you got the details you were looking for.
