Digital+Video
As I venture further into the depths of digital video, I'll keep track of tools and settings that I use. I mostly edit video on Ubuntu using OpenShot and a few command-line utilities.
Editors
- OpenShot (don't laugh)
- Windows Movie Maker XP (ok, laugh a little)
- Animoto
Examples
- Spring Olympics
- My first video using OpenShot. I definitely messed up some transitions. I underestimated the UI.
- Snowboarding
- Edited using Windows Movie Maker. Just simple cuts.
- Stop-motion
- "Edited" using mencoder.
- Animoto
- Why would you edit it yourself?
- Blind Marriage
- Edited using Ulead Media Studio. Also, my first attempt at video editing!
Tasks
Some tasks I find myself doing
- Importing from DV
sudo dvgrab --autosplit -f raw -size 4400
- Deinterlacing DV (deprecated, see h264enc)
ffmpeg -i INPUT_FILE -threads 0 -deinterlace \ -vcodec huffyuv -pix_fmt yuv422p \ -acodec copy OUTPUT_FILE
- Compressing for upload to YouTube and Vimeo
- h264enc - I use this for deinterlacing and compressing footage from my miniDV camera. After importing the footage as 'raw', this script plays twenty questions until it figures out what you want. Pretty handy as you no longer have to remember all the flags you need to set.
- mencoder
- Joining
mencoder -forceidx -oac copy -ovc copy \ input.files -o output.file
- Working with Canon S90 video files. The S90 stores its video in some container that isn't friendly to VirtualDub or mencoder.
- MP4Cam2AVI will put the video into a different container. Along with the newest version of ffdshow, you will be able to edit the video in VirtualDub (a reboot really is required after installing ffdshow).
- Alternatively, you can change the container with ffmpeg
ffmpeg -i s90VideoFile.mov -vcodec copy \ -acodec copy s90VideoFile.avi
- Then you can use the file with mencoder
