Garba, but with Attitude

For the impatient: Pictures

The sixth annual 'Garba With Attitude' competition took place over the weekend ... and it was a blast! They had twenty teams audition and ten made it to the show, this translates to each team had brought a quality dance to the show.

Of interest to me was that each dance felt like a production number, as opposed to a traditional dance. At GWA each team had an intro video as well as a video playing behind the dancers; a veritable media cornucopia for the audience. The nubmers told stories, parodied movies or used a theme to bring character and style to their number.

The show itself ran very smoothly and the auditorium was beautiful. The MCs were and act themselves (as it should be) and Raagapella performed while the judges were judging. I was bowled over by their rendition of the B.R. Chopra Mahabharat intro song/shloka.

Now on to the philosophy. I was excited for the winners but I also felt terrible for those who didn't place. Mad shoutouts to The Stix and Big Red Raas, and of course congratulations to Basmasti Raas. Part of the show's program included how the judges would judge the dances, they never displayed the little report card for each team. I wish it was more like the olympics in that regard. Judges judge independently with scores, and then the scores are added to determine the winner. While I'm wishing, I wish the competition organizers would host high-quality videos of the performances on the official sites and really make the web audience feel like they were at the show.

Fun times were had by all!! Thanks to the teams and GWA!!
