Natural Bridge Caverns

For the impatient: Pictures

Just kidding, the next stop on the road trip were the Natural Bridge Caverns! The largest known set of caverns in Texas are named after the natural bridge of rock that marks their entrance. Inside guides are positioned in each of several large caverns. Each has a story about their cavern and focus on a particular aspect of cavern development. The Natural Bridge Caverns are pretty old, created because of a nearby fault line and were once home to many, many bats!

Most interestingly, to me anyway, was how the ceilings were formed. As the water table dropped, layers of underground rocks would go with it. Each time the table dropped, it would take another layer of rock. Wider and wider layers of rock would be removed and eventually a dome shape cavern would form. Crazy!

In any case, should you want to visit, they're located just outside San Antonio. Be sure to drink water from the drinking fountains -- it's cavern water!
