Old+Digital+Photography
Why do I like digital photos instead of regular ones?
- Sharing your photos, instantly. We all know sharing is caring :-P
- Post-processing: touching up, red-eye removal, cropping etc.
- Save money by not printing unwanted photos.
- Creative endeavors, as highlighted below.
- Option to record moving pictures.
I've owned three digital cameras, but only really got interested recently. Currently I'm using the Canon S230 for my point 'n shoot needs and loving it. I just got a Sony DSC-F717 and am very, very excited to be playing around with it!

Sharing your pictures
- Here's my rant on how I like to share digital pictures
- Here's software that I wrote to help me do just that

- Basic advice - Steve's Digicams
- Expert advice - Imaging Resource
- Trusted 'online' stores
- Kits camera - call their 800 number, ask them to match an online price. they're respectable and they'll lower their price a little.

Panoramic Photos
- As you can see, I've started a collection
- I'll be sharing my tips as well (I don't have any just yet :-P)
- Here's a bunch of tips.
- Sitchers
- I use whatever came with my camera, PhotoStich
- Bill uses panoramafactory.
- I'd like to experiment with PTGui...it looks more promising
- Manually composing/creating panoramas - Panotools
- Viewers
- Stunning examples
Photomosaics
- Free Software and tutorial: andreaplanet.com
- My Tips
- Here are some notes on my first mosaic.
- Key point: Make sure your overall picture has large recognizable, cartoon-ish patterns. Try to have varied colors with high contrast borders. If you like a really complicated picture, then try photoshopping the borders and regions until it's more cartoony, I promise the mosaic will look much better if you do.
- The rest should just be up to the parameter forumlas I've noted below.
- Please note that I was trying to create a mosaic that is more about the memories, i.e. unique pictures, than making a perfectly accurate mosaic.
- Parameters
- There are 5 main parameters, these are ones that I use:
- Formula:
- Width = Max(W,H)*DPI, where DPI >= 300
- Num Tiles = W*H,
- <= 30% change
- Use judgement for Num tiles apart.
- Standard Algorithm (flipping introduces doubles)
- For a 30"x 20" mosaic:
12000px wide - 900 tiles - 15 tiles apart - 30% change - Standard algorithm
- For a 36"x 24" mosaic:
15000px wide - 1250 tiles - 17 tiles apart - 30% change - Standard algorithm
Printing
- Costco's awesome pricing scheme.
Only catch is you have to wait at least a day to get the prints (2008: 1hr photo!)
- 19 cents for a 4" x 6"
- 69 cents for a 5" x 7" or a 6" x 9"
- 199 cents for a 8" x 10"
- 299 cents for a 12" x 18"
