Twinkies Deconstructed

By: Steve Ettlinger - Available at Amazon

Where do twinkies come frome? Apparently from China, Switzerland and whole host of other places around the world. Of all the facts, these were two interesting bits. First, there are no eggs or butter a twinkie, despite it being a cake. They have gone through immense efforts to remove, as much as possible, all ingredients that can go bad. Next, some ingredients are derived, wholly, from crude oil. The author took a surprisingly positive to neutral tone towards his findings. This books was not written by somebody out to destroy the twinkie. I came away thinking that humans are funny. An unreal amount of industrial effort goes into making every twinkie. I wonder what would happen if the owners were to redirect the effort into a million mini local bakeries that would create the treat with fresh ingredients.
